About Le Velo Virtuel – the JDRF Virtual Cycling Challenge

Set in two velodromes across Australia on 27 July 2019, this first-of-its-kind experience uses cycling and virtual technology to link participants as they compete against each other from anywhere in the world whilst soaking up the action of a mountain stage of the Tour de France.

Come and experience the atmosphere of a night-cycling event surrounded by live music and food as you are cheered on by your team and your supporters whilst raising funds to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs for type 1 diabetes research.

In teams of one, two or four, you’ll be racing on a unique Zwift virtual course. You can attend the live velodrome event in Sydney or Melbourne and “Zwift” along with hundreds of others or take on this challenge from anywhere in the world simply by using a stationary smart trainer and joining our virtual Zwift event. You can even put on your own Le Velo Virtuel party in your home town and join as a virtual team. You’ll feel connected to the event via our live broadcast and be able to experience the live race streaming commentary and interviews across locations and time zones.

How it works

Register for the event solo or as part of a team. You can choose to come to one of our festive onsite location in Sydney or Melbourne. Or participate from your home/clubhouse/office/gym with some friends or colleagues.

The event takes place on stationary bikes: smart trainers all linked to a virtual ride through our platform partner Zwift. The course you’ll be riding is a custom-made course by Zwift that will take in various types of terrain.

It’s an evening event. Starting at 5pm for set up to make sure everyone is connected.

The challenge will start at 8:30pm when the penultimate stage of the 2019 Tour de France begins in Albertville. You’ll ride on our Zwift virtual course in relay format with your teammates until the Tour de France stage finishes in Val Thorens. It will take approximately four hours.

The winning team will be the team that covers the most virtual kilometres during that time.

The event will be broadcast live thanks to our partners videocraft and SBS. There’ll be big screens showing the Tour de France and crossing to both Le Velo Virtuel locations. Meet celebrities who will commentate the event and others who will race on the track.

It will be a festive occasion with music, a great array of food trucks, fun races for your kids and display races on the velodrome so that you can watch track riders do their thing as you’re doing yours.

As part of the lead up to the event, we will have schedule Zwift meet-ups / training rides for anyone who would like to join.

Challenge your friends, colleagues. Compete against other corporate teams and/or bike clubs. We encourage you to join as a team of two or 4, but we dare you to do it solo…
